Course Registration

Preparing for Course Registration

Run a new Degree Audit Report each semester to help identify courses to take for an upcoming term.

How to Run a DARs

Check in with your Advisor to confirm the classes you plan to take will help make progress toward graduation.

How to Meet With an Academic Advisor

While not required, using the Schedule Builder feature will help you find schedule options for the courses you plan to take for the term. You can generate schedules and choose the one you want to submit to Course Request.

How to Build a Schedule

Course Request is the first phase of the course registration process. During this phase, you can let the university know which classes you want to take the most in a future term.

How to Course Request Classes

Review your Course Request results and plan for any additional courses needed. You may use Schedule Builder to find course options that will work with your results.

How to Build a Schedule

Once Course Request results have come out and the add/drop period opens, you may make adjustments to your classes for the upcoming term. If you didn't get a class you wanted during Course Request, now is the time to add something else instead.

Additional Resources

  • Academic Planning
Students are responsible for creating and updating an academic plan. It’s important for students to share their academic plans with their assigned advisors. Students should reference and update their plan each registration period to determine what classes to take next.

Virginia Tech offers a great academic planning program called HokieGPS. And students can learn more about using the HokieGPS tool through our Academic Planning program.
  • Course Catalog
The Course Catalog contains program degree requirements, financial information, undergraduate policies, and academic calendars. Students should refer to the course catalog for the year they entered Virginia Tech. Example, if Fall 2025 is the first semester enrolled, then the student should follow the 2025-26 catalog.

The Course Catalog assists students in understanding their requirements for graduation and exploring course options and other programs.
  • Dates and Deadlines
Always remember to check the add/drop and course request dates on the Office of the University Registrar’s website to stay up to date on registration dates. Information about change of major and other important academic dates are also available here.
